Jakarta - The Asian joint maritime security authorities have foiled an attempt to pirate the Malaysian-registered tanker, MT Zafirah, in the Vietnamese waters, according to the Indonesia Maritime Security Information Center (PIKMI).

"The tanker which carried 320,173 liters of crude oil from Pasir Gudang, Johor, to Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, lost contact with the owner on Tuesday (Nov 20) 174.4 nautical miles off the southeastern coast of Con Son Island in Vietnam," Chief of PIKMI Mohamad Yasin said in a press release issued on Sunday.

The Vietnamese maritime police saved nine crew members of the tanker, consisting of four from Indonesia and five from Myanmar, the release said.

PIKMI said the pirates were supposed to sell the crude oil in Vietnam.

While on its way to Vietnam, the pirates dropped the crew members on a lifeboat, it said.

Currently, the crew members are given shelter in Vietnam after being saved by a fishery boat passing by in the waters on Nov 21, it said.

The tanker was spotted on Nov 22 abut 35 nautical miles southeast of Vung Tung in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese maritime police later sent two patrol boats to the scene. However, the tanker's name has been changed to MD Feahorse with different IMO numbers, it said.

PIKMI is a unit overseen by the National Maritime Institute (Namarin) which manages information on crimes against ships in the ocean.

The agency is also a partner of Information Sharing Center-Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia (ISC-ReCAAP) based in Singapore.

Shortly after receiving a report from the owner of MT Zafirah, ISC-ReCAAP sent the information to the officer in charge in the region. (*)
